The opening ceremony of the second academic annual conference of Jiangxi Association of Science and Technology and the academic youth forum for Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Zone (PLEEZ) construction and modern soil and water conservation were held in Jiangxi, China, on October 10, 2012. The theme of the annual meeting is “innovation of science and technology and construction of prosperous harmonious beautiful Jiangxi”. It was co-hosted by Jiangxi Association for Science and Technology and Jiangxi Provincial Water Resources Department.

Prof. Li Rui, president of World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWAC) was invited to attend the annual conference and gave a report titled “Deliberation on the Development of Science and Technology on Soil and Water Conservation”.

President Li Rui illustrated in detail the development, opportunities and challenges of soil and water conservation in the world and China from three aspects, i.e. the severe challenges facing the global resources and environment, the present situation and problems of soil erosion and water loss in China, and the achievements and missions of the science and technology on soil and water conservation in China. Five present development trends of the soil and water conservation has been pointed out by President Li: 1) the study on the process of soil erosion gets deepened and extended constantly; 2) research methods and technologies has been updated rapidly; 3) the socioeconomics study on soil and water conservation has been paid more attention; 4) the relationship between regional soil and water conservation and global study has became increasingly closer; 5) study on the benefit assessment and comprehensive configuration of soil and water conservation measures have been pushed steadily.

At last, President Li Rui gave a brief introduction on WASWAC- the Water Association of Soil and Water Conservation. After the conference, President Li Rui was invited to the seminar held in Jiangxi Provincial Research Institute for Soil and Water Conservation, and proposed some instructional suggestions on its development. Meanwhile, he hoped that Jiangxi Provincial Research Institute for Soil and Water Conservation can be influenced more widely through contacts with WASWAC.
